Actor; hacking victim turned campaigner
In April 2011, Hugh Grant secretly recorded a conversation with a former News of the World journalist who boasted about an extensive culture of phone hacking at News International and claimed that editors had tapped into Grant's phone, too. Grant published his account of the encounter in the New Statesman, a British newsmagazine, and has since become the most outspoken member of Hacked Off, a group that represents high-profile victims of hacking and campaigns for greater press regulation. Now a fixture on British news shows, Grant pushed for a judge-led inquiry into the hacking scandal and on July 14, 2011, filed a lawsuit against the Metropolitan Police to disclose documents it seized in 2006.
